I planned on having Tuesday be the set days to post tutorials, but some things have changed, and right now it’s a bit inconvenient. So, I want to apologize for the change in schedule – hopefully things will get back on track in that area soon.
Instead, today I want to talk about wearing lolita to school. I know that many of you will be returning to your coursework soon, so here are some tips on making the transition.
~*~ DO… ~*~
- Wear light, comfortable clothing. If you’re going to be on campus all day, you don’t want to be stuck in something heavy or uncomfortable. Personally, I like to wear babydoll or empire waisted dresses to class because they don’t need a petticoat, and usually have some sort of shirring at the waist to accommodate lunch!
- Ditch the petticoats, wigs, and over-the-top accessories. Tons of bracelets, bangles and rings might look cute, but they make sitting at a desk to take notes a real pain in the rear. Instead, opt for some cute wristcuffs, or a single, light bracelet. Petticoats are inconvenient too – they take up a ton of space, and school desks aren’t exactly known for being roomy. I’d also recommend leaving the over the top gyaru wig at home – not only will you have to check it throughout the day, but the student sitting behind you will be annoyed if they can’t see over or around your hair!
- Bring a big, sturdy bag. My favorite Angelic Pretty schoolbag is in the process of breaking, but I’ve had it for several years, and it’s seen its share of netbooks, notebooks, textbooks, and other school supplies. Personally, I’d recommend Metamorphose’s school bags if you’re looking for something that will last – I’ve had mine for about 3 years (it’s been in existence for at least 5) and there are hardly any signs of wear on it at all. If you can’t find a lolita bag that will accommodate all of your needs, find a cute backpack that will match the majority of your outfits instead. Sometimes function is more important than fashion.
- Wear comfortable shoes. When you’re going to be out all day, you aren’t going to want to be stuck with shoes that rub your toes and heels when you walk. If you’re not comfortable in heels, find a cute pair of platforms or flats.
- Bring your parasol. A lot of girls don’t see the point in taking their parasol with them to class – but trust me, at some point you’ll be glad you have it. If you don’t want to carry a regular one, get one of the cute foldable ones from your favorite store, and bring it along instead.
- Protect your clothing from messy classes. If you’re going to be taking an art class, P.E class, or science lab, don’t risk catching your nice clothes on fire or getting them spattered with paint. If you want, wear a simple, cheap dress – or better yet, bring a full apron or a change of clothes. Looking cute is fine, but sometimes it’s better to err on the side of caution.
- Take a deep breath, and mentally prepare yourself before going out. After four years of wearing lolita, and even longer spent dabbling in other alternative fashions, it would be easy for me to say that “oh, I’m used to it by now,” but it wouldn’t be entirely true. Before you leave home, check your reflection, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you look cute no matter what anyone else says.
That’s it for today Ducklings. Have any tips you want to share? Leave them in the comments.

For P.E. I wouldn’t recommend wearing Lolita at all. lol But for art class, other than an apron, one could wear a plain pinafore, or a lolita-ized smock, that’s pretty enough for a Lolita, but plain enough to mess up with paint and such. Also! If you have culinary arts or cooking class, wear that protective white coat! I’m sure you’re supposed to wear one anyway.
I have found that ballet flats are really nice if you don’t do much walking. … But from my experience, they are horrible no matter how littler walking you do. (From my experience that is) So I suggest in some nice gladiator sandals instead, or some pretty cork ones.
Hope maybe that helped… a little… D:
This might be a weird question, but why do you think parasols are useful for school?
Because at some point you’ll probably have to go outside (either to walk to another building, or to leave) and if it’s raining, or even just particularly hot, it’s a good idea to have a parasol with you to protect yourself, and your nice clothing. ^_^
Nice tips! I don’t have many Lolita clothies yet, and I haven’t worn it to school yet, but that day will come :)
The parasol one is so true! Having a short break outside in the sun can be very nice, but a parasol is needed then!
I have been wearing lolita for 3 years or so (but before that I already looked….weird, so I was used to looks) It is actually very comfortable and easy, especially with just a poofy skirt and a cute tee. I do wear a petticoat with almost all my lolita outfits though. I have petticoats made of fabric, so they are not scratchy like some tule petticoats can be.
We have a Uniform in our school…. but I would surely get an oppurtunity to take Lolita school bags.
At my school we had a school uniform, but for the last 2 years that you are there, you had to wear a suit (which you’d have to go out and buy yourself) and I found this as an opportunity to wear some lolita, just toned down. I have a navy MM replica which is quite simple and I wore a small petti with it, black loliable shoes and then a black suit jacket. And I carried my black parasol with me when I could. I guess this is sort of a corporate lolita style! XD But really, being inventive can be fun. ^_^
